The route
The road crosses the Swiss National Park over the Ofenpass, drops into the Val Müstair, then climbs to the Umbrail at 2,501 m. Just after the border, it joins the Stelvio Pass at 2,757 m before descending to Bormio.
Not to be missed
The view from the top of the Stelvio over the Ortler and its glaciers, and the plunging view of the famous 48 numbered hairpins on the Trafoi side. The Swiss National Park, crossed at the start, is the oldest nature reserve in the Alps.
Good to know
The Stelvio is very busy in summer with cyclists and motorcyclists: a dawn start is recommended. Inside the National Park, stop only at the designated areas.
Opening dates depend on snow: always check road conditions before setting off (TCS, viasuisse or the Italian and French road authorities).
