The route
From Brig, the road climbs above the Rhône valley in wide loops and protective galleries to the pass at 2,005 m. The southern side descends through Simplon village, then plunges into the narrow, dramatic Gondo gorge before the border and the Ossola valley.
Not to be missed
The stone eagle watching over the pass, the Simplon hospice and, on the way back, Napoleon's old hospice. The road itself, built in the early 19th century, is a monument of engineering.
Good to know
It is a transit route, so expect lorries on weekdays. Set off early for a smooth climb. Italian border at Gondo: keep your papers to hand.
Opening dates depend on snow: always check road conditions before setting off (TCS, viasuisse or the Italian and French road authorities).
