The route
The road leaves Martigny through the Entremont valley, past Orsières and Bourg-Saint-Pierre. Beyond, the tunnel road runs straight on: keep to the historic road, which climbs in regular hairpins to the pass at 2,469 m. On the Italian side, the descent towards Saint-Rhémy and Aosta opens up into long sweeping bends above the valley.
Not to be missed
The hospice, founded in the 11th century by Saint Bernard of Menthon and still home to the canons, the small summit lake that marks the border, and the famous St Bernard dogs, whose story is told on site during the summer season.
Good to know
The route crosses a border: keep identity papers and vehicle documents to hand. The top of the pass is exposed and cool even in summer; bring a warm layer for the stop at the summit.
Opening dates depend on snow: always check road conditions before setting off (TCS, viasuisse or the Italian and French road authorities).
